We arrived on Saturday afternoon October 26th in Vienna, Ga at Dooly Campground for a
drop-in project this week.
We found the site for to park the camper and got hooked up for the week.
On Sunday we went to the local Church in Vienna, Ga to the 9:00 service, where we the
welcome was great as visitors.
After church we traveled to Andersonville, GA the site of the Civil War Prison Camp.
We also found out it was the National Prisoner of War Museum
honoring all POW's in America's conflicts.
While on a tour of the old prison site we found the Michigan
Memorial to the POW's who died while here.
Next to the prison site is the National Cemetery, with the graves identified and in neat rows.
We then drove to Plains, Georgia to visit the Jimmy Carter Museum and Visitor Center. The Museum is in the High School building that he attended. Jimmy Carter still lives in town about 4 blocks from this site and teaches Sunday school in church on Sundays.
About 3 miles out of town is his Boyhood farm and home.
This is the house that Jimmy Carter grew up in. When he was young it did not have
electric and water in the house.
Right behind the site was a nursery field of pecan trees. Which we found very interesting.
Back in town again we went to the old Railroad Depot.
The depot was the site of his headquarters for his run to be the
President of the United States..
We returned to the Campground to work for the week. This is not a large campground but is very neat. It serves youth and adult groups in Southern Georgia, with camps and retreats.
One of the jobs we were told about was a leaking toilet that needed to be pulled and a new seal installed.
Dennis installed several ballasts in lights to get them working again. Because of the age they needed to be rewired to make the new ballasts work.
One of the jobs that Nancy got to do was clean propane tanks and put a new coat of paint on them.
We also were asked to get the light on the chapel cross working again, so we changed the bulb and reset the timer.
We were also asked to clean the filters on the Stove and grill hood. There were 5 sections to the filters we pressure washed and then dunked in Dawn soap to get them cleaned. Nancy also clean the floor in the dining hall, and the grease tray in the grill.
Dennis got the chance to run a chainsaw again this week to cut up a tree that had fell in the camp and clean up the brush.
After this week we left this camp on Friday morning and headed to Florida. We stopped in Ocala, Fl for the weekend. This next week we will meet up with our son Aaron and his wife Amy for a week at Disney.
