This was our first of 3 weeks working in Pensacola, Florida. We are working on flood damaged homes in the area from April 2014 when they received 28 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. With a one hour period they received 8 inches. We are moving into the time that this project is closing down and we are tasked with getting some of them checked off the list.
On Monday the team started the week off by presenting a bible to a home owner whose house was completed by NOMADS.
The house we worked on is getting 2 new bathrooms, and other repairs to complete. Marty & Dennis hauled in the new toilet.
Dennis & Marty worked on getting the front screen door of the house to latch.
Tuesday night we attended the volunteer appreciation dinner hosted by the Pensacola church. It recognized the efforts of all the volunteer groups that had worked in the area. There were over 77,000 hours of volunteer labor worth over $1.8 million dollars to help fix the area.
Dennis & Joe removed all the tile from the bathroom wall around the tub & then the bathtub.
Nancy & Donna spent the week sanding, mudding, & taping in both bathrooms.
Wednesday night we attended the weekly free dinner at the Presbyterian church for volunteers.
Thursday was Marty & Carols last day on the project. We went out to dinner at Brothers BBQ.
Friday we went to the Naval Base & toured Advance Redoubt which is part of the Gulf Island National Seashore.
We also went to Fort Barrancas National Park. This fort overlooked the bay entrance and was important to the protection of the bay.
One of the hallways we walked through in the fort is said to be haunted by a confederate soldier.
Next we visited the Pensacola Lighthouse & Museum. In the museum they were starting to decorate the keepers quarters for Christmas.
Dennis climbed the stairs to the top of the lighthouse. This is still an active lighthouse to assist navigation in the gulf.
Not only could you see the shore line on one side but you could see the Blue Angels planes on the base from the top of the lighthouse.
These painted pelicans are all over the Pensacola area, This one was at the lighthouse.
We finished the day at the Naval Aviation Museum, where we watched the Imax movie D-Day. They were also holding a naturalization ceremony while we were in the museum.
Planes of all sorts were there as well as any Naval aviation related items. The museum has mock ups of several of the past and current aircraft carriers. In the one part of the museum the floor is a likeness of the deck of a WWII carrier. It also featured the Navy's part in the space program.
