October 15th we left home for the winter to start our mission work for this winter. We spent 2 nights on the road before arriving in Lumberton, North Carolina for our first project. Our team worked on two different houses this week. The NOMADS are here to repair damages left from several hurricanes in the last few years. Much of the damage has been caused by flooding from the Lumber River.
We went to Pier 41 for dinner on Saturday night. This seafood restaurant is just up the street from the camping area. The food was great!
Sunday evening we had our team meeting at the Chestnut Street UMC. We had cake & apple cider.
Monday morning Jeff, the Construction Manager went over the work we would be doing. for the week. Only Mike and Lee had been on this site previously.
There was lots of work to be done at Ms. Charlene's house where the previous team had started the repairs. Mike and Lee completed the painting in the house the first couple of days.
Bridget & Nancy removed the old carpeting in the living room. There were 3 carpets and a layer of padding that needed to be removed.
Dennis helped us roll up the old carpet & put it outside for removal.
All of the new lower cabinets had to be removed from the floor in the kitchen so we could lay the luan & then the floor.
Lee worked at completing the painting in the hall way.
Dennis, Bridget & Mike stapled the luan to the kitchen floor.
Dennis & Hugh (from the disaster recovery) unloaded the counter tops
We celebrated Paige's 70 Birthday with a hot dog cookout & potluck at the church on Tuesday evening.
Dennis cut the counter top to fit.
Bridget, Dennis & Mike fit the counter top on top of the cabinets.
Dennis showed Lee how to replace the old receptacles in the house.
Dennis installed the luan.
Nancy did caulking in several places to give the project a finished look.
At Amy's house the popcorn ceiling was patched & spray painted by Bob, Paige, Don and Paula.
Bob repaired a bedroom window, they also had several spots in the floor to repair from water damage.
Bob, Don & Dennis discussed the work to be done in the master bathroom.
On Thursday night we went to Golden Corral for dinner and to say Goodbye to Mike, Lee and Bridget as they leave this site.
On Friday night Dennis, Nancy, Paige & Bob attended the Volunteer Dinner at the church. The dinner was put on by the disaster response group & all workers as well as people whose homes were repaired were invited to attend. We are preparing to welcome 3 more couples to the project for next week.

One of those couples are Bob and Linda Webster, friends of ours when we all lived in NJ. They over-nighted months ago at the RV site you did while here at the house. Good people.
