Aldersgate Camp, Ravenna, Kentucky Week 1

We returned home from our trip to Seattle on September 6, 2013, it was great visiting with Aaron and Jason's family again this year. On our way home we visited Devils Tower National Monument and then stopped overnight at the Home of NOMADS, Ross and Shirley Wiley in Iowa. We spent the labor day week at the NOMADS annual meeting in Illinois before returning home.

On Friday October 4, 2013 we were again packed and ready to hit the road for our first project this fall.

This is the camper in the back yard as we were preparing to leave. We got out of the driveway about    11:30 am which was later than we planned.

We crossed the Ohio river into Kentucky about 5:30 pm, with all of the rush hour traffic on a Friday afternoon. We stopped for the night at the Walmart in Frankfort, KY.

We arrived at Aldersgate camp on Saturday about 10:30 am and got parked in time to join the camp director at the lodge for lunch.

The camp sits on the old town site Fitchburg, which is a Historic site for the furnace.

The Furnace is the largest of its type in the nation but did not last long as the railroad never came through the town.

Our team meeting on Sunday night was a good time to get to know the people we were going to be working with. The team consists  of Leaders - Larry and Marilyn Maffett, David and Sally Dyke, Bob and Barb Eakin, Gene Scroggy, and new NOMADS Pat and Kathy O'Leary, as well as ourselves Dennis and Nancy Williams.

The lighted cross on the hill at the chapel overlooks the rest of the camp.

On Monday Morning the first job for the guys was to remove the old goals and prepare the basketball court for the new Gorilla Goals.

After lunch Dennis was caught checking out the angles of the cornhole game boards.

The ladies spent most of the week working to remove mold from the restroom was and other buildings. Here Kathy is scrubbing the upper wall.

Dennis and Dave spent the week working to fix the bridge over the creek. They had to jack it up and then dig the ground out for a new foundation to be poured, next week.

Nancy had to go help Pat on putting the new goal together.

Nancy, Marilyn and the other ladies worked to clean out the furnace room in the lodge of its collections that had accumulated there.

On Wednesday evening the camp hosted a wonderful welcome dinner for the team. We sat and talked after the dinner for a long time.

On Friday we visited Berea, Kentucky, there are 3 sites in the town where the local crafts are displayed for visitors. While there we went to lunch at Boone Tavern. We have had a great first week here with beautiful weather and lots of laughter. On Saturday many of us many a trip into town to pick up a few supplies and then enjoyed the day. The camp was very busy with several groups here for retreats. The noise of the kids having fun was great to hear.
