Aldersgate Camp, Ravenna, Kentucky Week 2

The week started with the team going to church on Sunday and then out to lunch at the restaurant on the river in Irvine. We had the chance to get the group picture on Sunday morning on the church steps.

(L to R) Barb Eakin, Marilyn Maffett, Sally Dyke, Gene Scroggy, Nancy Williams, Dave Dyke, Kathy O'leary, Dennis Williams, Dave Cohn, (Camp Director), Larry Maffett, Pat O'leary, and Bob Eakin.

When you enter the camp on the road these are the signs that great you as you arrive. The entrance to the RV park is on the left just past the signs.

On Sunday afternoon we went for a walk up the road past the end of the pavement. to the old oil fields. These old tanks are just sitting in the weeds as well as several old pumps.

On Monday morning the first thing we worked on was getting the basketball poles erected. After they were up Pat and Bob got the rest of it put together.

The gals worked on painting the shower house. Here Marilyn and Barb are checking out the upper area to be painted.

At the end of the day Nancy shot the first basket on the new backboard. It only took her a couple of tries.

Tuesday morning saw the arrival of the cement for the bridge base. Here Dennis and Dave are working the cement as it comes off of the truck. Everything worked as planned and the forms held.

Tuesday also saw Pat and Bob working with Dwight the camp maintenance to get soffits on the Cedar House. When it rained on Wednesday and Thursday this job could not get done.

Bob and Pat worked inside the Cedar house laying the laminate floor until they ran out of flooring for the job. Here Joel the camp program director is also working with them.

On Wednesday at lunch we helped Amanda (Joels wife) to celebrate his birthday a couple day early with cake and ice cream. Amanda got the recipe for the cake from Joels mother, it was a butterfinger cake that he wanted.

Nancy and Marilyn spent Thursday working in the Cedar house cleaning the sawdust and scraping the steps clean of the mud that was on them.

Wednesday and Thursday found Dennis, Dave and Gene splitting wood for the camp. (it was out of the rain) We split three large stacks for the winter use.

On Friday the team went to the Red River Gorge now that it was reopened after the government closing.

The first item we stopped at was the interpretative center and then the NADA tunnel which takes you into the gorge. It is an old train tunnel they used to haul logs out of the area to the mills.

Here is a look through the tunnel, it is only wide enough for one vehicle at a time.

We then stopped at the Sky Bridge area for a short hike.

As we walked out towards the Sky Bridge the views of the gorge are terrific.

This is the trail out over the Sky Bridge many people did not go all the way across.

This is from the trail under the Sky Bridge looking up towards the top. You can see where the rock has created the bridge here.

After we returned Nancy and I went for a walk over to the zip line area, but Nancy didn't think I should use it without the proper equipment.

On Friday night the two of us walked over the foot bridge we have been repairing and took this picture. There was a full moon out and it was wonderful to just be out in the evening. It is so peaceful here at Albright Camp. We only have one week left to go and will miss the quiet and solitude of the camp. After the hustle of the summer this has been a great time!
