This was our second week at UMOM. With most of the Christmas decorating done during our first week, we were given several new jobs to start.
On Sunday night some of us attended a Christmas Concert at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. The choir had over 50 adults in it. There was a youth choir and a children's choir with over 20 children in it. There was also a large bell choir, a small group choir, and brass ensemble
We were asked to move one of the many Christmas trees we put up to the Watson Center which is a center downtown that serves the homeless. They asked us to move the 12 foot Christmas tree from the UMOM courtyard to the Watson Center dining area. We had to remove the ornaments and lights & take the tree apart before moving it.
One of the major projects on the work list was to cement the bricks in the outside wall around the chapel meditation garden.
At the Watson Center we put up decorations around the storage closet, offices cubicles, filing cabinets, and any place else we could find in the dining hall.
We decided to use bows as our tree garland and for a tree topper since there were no extra tree toppers.
Roger learned how to run the wet saw from James to cut tile for the Helping Hands Starbucks. At Helping Hands the UMOM clients participate in learning how to prepare and serve the many items that Starbucks sell.
We added more decorations out front of the entrance. The red bows added color and festivity to the shrubs.
One of our other projects was painting. We started by painting the courtyard fence around the basketball court and picnic area.
The tiling job in Starbucks turned into a very big job. Getting the pieces to fit correctly was a real challenge.
Another job was to finish siding and insulation on a office shed. This also included cutting and adding windows and trim inside and out.
The finished bricks around the meditation garden.
Nancy stepped in to help with the siding on office shed. She cut some of the siding.
Dennis celebrated his birthday on December 9! We had cake & ice cream & watched the movie "God's Not Dead". Some of the gifts he received were a chicken that plays jingle bells and does the chicken dance, and a handmade walking stick from Montana.
The final step of the finishing the wall was to sand down the excess cement and sweep the area.
We had a visit from Don and Mary Becker, and Sandra and Steve Drake on Thursday. They brought snacks for our afternoon break & came to see all that we had accomplished at UMOM.
We started painting the railing around the daycare and the Veteran housing.
We finished the week by going to Bill Johnson's Big Apple BBQ. Since there was not one table for 10 people they gave us two tables across from each other.
The food was good and there was plenty of it.
On Saturday we were invited to Anne & Win's house for dinner. We had a nice dinner of salad & soup.
Everyone enjoyed seeing all the decorations in their home. We also picked cuties & lemons from the trees in their backyard.
To finish the meal off Anne served a trifle desert with fresh fruit & angel food cake.
