NOMADS Lake Junaluska North Carolina Week 2

We moved into the second week of our project here in North Carolina on Sunday by attending church at Maple Grove UMC. It is a small local church but had a great choir and a friendly congregation.

After the service we attended Lunch/Brunch Buffet at the Lambuth Inn on the Lake Junaluska campus.

Monday morning found part of the team cleaning the filters on the air conditioners at the Lakeside Lodge.

Dennis is taking the cover off the unit to vacuum out the fins inside. With Nancy, Vicki and Jim also working on this site it did not take long to finish the building.

Dave, Ken and Joanne worked on the campground apartments to get the walls opened up where they had gotten wet during the storms that also sent all of the floods through South Carolina. The wet drywall and insulation was disposed of. After the morning break we discussed that this project needed to be closed back up by Thursday as the apartments were rented for the weekend.

With some new insulation the walls in all 3 apartments were ready for new drywall.

Dennis and Ken spent the rest of the day getting the new green board installed on the walls.

By the end of the day with a little overtime work we had the first coat of mud on the walls. We then turned up the heat in the rooms to get the mud dried overnight. On Tuesday Dennis applied the second and third coats of mud, using a 45 minute hardening product. By the end of the day Tuesday we had applied the primer to the walls.

On Wednesday morning Ken started getting the baseboards cut.

By the end of the day Wednesday he had all of the baseboards replaced.

Nancy, Madeline and Joanne got the final coats of paint on the walls by the end of the day.

On Wednesday evening the team went to the Haywood Smokehouse for a BBQ dinner.

Thursday morning found Madeline and the rest of the team cleaning up the rooms and getting the furniture back in place.

Dennis used caulking to try to close up any place we could find that water might have a chance to leak into the building.

One of the final jobs was to sand the door frames and clean them up.

After the door frames were sanded Nancy panted them to finish the job on the apartments by Thursday afternoon, ready for them to rent to the wedding party.

As we worked on the apartments, part of the team was also over at Shackford Hall working on the steps. They scraped the steps and then applied a heavy paint to them but ran out of paint at the end of the day Thursday before getting them finished.

Ken and Madeline went to the walking bridge over the dam and worked on replacing the nails that were pulling out.

On Friday afternoon we were treated to a guided ride on a pontoon around Lake J.

This is a picture from the lake looking up at Inspiration point. Note the fall colors on the shore of the lake.

While walking downtown Waynesville, we found this sign that is a replica of a sign that used to be over the main street.

These figures represented old time musician in the downtown area.

While in the area and so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway several of us took the chance to drive a small portion to see the fall colors in the mountains as they hit their peak.

The views with the colors were great and eye popping!

Every hill and turn in the road gave a new look at the great colors.

Just driving down the road you would be treated to tunnels of color! What a time to be in this area.
