We started working at ECHO for our 3 week project.
It is a learning farm for interns who teach people around the world how to raise food.
We had an introduction to ECHO by Pete.
He took us on a tour of where we would be working and where all the supplies are stored.
We were shown where all the supplies are stored.
All of the supply rooms are labeled and organized.
Dick, Dennis, Bill and Bob checked out the power tool room.
This is the Seed Bank. This is our first project.
It is to be remodeled on the inside and cleaned on the outside.
The ladies first task was to clean the gutters.
They were filled with dirt, leaves, and plant growth.
We were told that there may be snakes in the gutters.
All we found were a few lizards and frogs.
Linda and Merideth cleaned the gutters with a shovel, hand rake, broom and hose.
The guys were excited to start with demolishing of the old room.
Pete showed them what the Seed bank dream rooms
would look like and what needed to be done.
Duane and Bob broke up the old tile after the counters were removed.
On Tuesday we were given an excellent tour of ECHO by Russ.
We learned how ECHO uses all the land they have to set up different plots
for farming to replicate the conditions in the world
from mountains to desert to even house top gardening.
The Neem Tree is used in the production of several products
from toothpaste to lotion to anti-itch cream to oil and even shampoo.
Nancy helped picked up the cut brush around the outside of the Seed Bank.
Sharon sorted seeds in the seed bank.
Seeds are collected all the time and always need to be sorted after they dry.
Volunteers come in to sort seeds on Tuesdays.
Dennis worked on the new door
while Sharon and Linda helped clean up the tear out of the new room.
We ate lunch at the Seed Bank on Wednesday and Thursday.
There was all sorts of seeds sharing the table with us for lunch.
Meredith showed Bob what needed to be done outside.
Dennis and Dick worked on the electrical.
They installed switches, outlets, fans, and wiring,
Duane, Bill and Bob discussed how to install the new window in the wall they built
Meredith, and Linda power washed the outside drive
after the inside was power washed by Meredith and Nancy..
Dennis and Dick worked on pulling wire in the ceiling of the new room.
Saturday night we attended a meatloaf dinner at the Tice United Methodist Church.
They served a huge dinner with strawberry short cake for desert.
