We camped at Midway Campground in Big Cypress National Preserve for five days. It had 50 amp electric hook up only, with a dump station on the grounds. It is a small Park campground halfway between Miami and Naples on US-41. This was the perfect area to check out all of the Park areas without having too many miles to drive.
We visited the Oasis Visitor Center which was only a few miles from our campground.
They had maps and information about the area.
They also had a movie and a few nature items of interest.
At Oasis Visitor center there was an elevated boardwalk over a flowing canal .
It was filled with alligators of all sizes.
Along the roads in the area were Anhinga birds (snake birds). They were everywhere. After they are in the water fishing they climb into a tree or bush to dry out so they can fly.
This was one of the swamp buggies that we saw.
The large tires let it be driven in the swamp.
The cypress trees had roots that spread out and grabbed into the soil.
This area had several Cypress swamps.
We went to the Shark Valley Visitor's Center in the Everglades.
It was about 30 minutes from our campground.
The Wood Stork was one of the popular birds we saw along the road
and in the preserve and everglades.
Our picture at the top of the Tower in Shark Valley.
We took the 2 hour tram tour to the tower.
It is a beautiful spiral look out tower 7 miles into the park.
Alligators were so close you could almost reach out and touch them.
This one was laying along side the road where our tram went only a few feet from us.
Both Cypress and Everglades are filled with birds of all kinds.
These two were going through the mating process.
We stopped at the Miccosukee Indian Village.
They were having a festival. We watched the alligator wrestler.
He trained the gators to let him put his hand in it's mouth and even his chin.
We went to the Gulf Coast Visitor center in Everglades City.
We went on the 9 am tour of 10,000 islands.
We saw lots of dolphins.
These are two of several that played in the wake of the boat.
The weather was a bit cool on the boat but perfect to see the wild life around us.
You just can't keep Dennis away from the Post Office.
This is the actual Post Office in Ochopee, FL.
They are open for a few hours a day.
