Crystal River Nov 30 - Dec 5 Week 1

This was our first week at Crystal River Florida, we arrived here on Friday November 27th and started to get familiar with the area. By Saturday evening all 6 units of the team were in place.

We attended church at Crystal River UMC on Sunday.  Their church was decorated with several Christmas Trees in the sanctuary.

After church the whole team and Pastor David and his wife went to lunch at Charlies Fish House.

We knew it was a good place when we saw all the birds perched nearby waiting for their handouts.

Most of the week was spent helping the church prepare for the live nativity Bethlehem.  This was not only a nativity scene but also a Bethlehem complete with market places, the Inn, wise men, and stable.

Chris and Ernie poured three cement pads at The Sanctuary a rehab place for homeless people.  The pads are part of the weight lifting area for the men in the group home.

Nancy & Connie had fun setting up the basket booth at Bethlehem.  They claimed it as their booth & decorated it with all the baskets they could find.

Patty & Susan worked on trimming the church court yard.  We all helped put out the 90 bags of mulch the church wanted spread.

For the event, the church needed to have a piano moved from the Bethel Chapel  to the yard in front of the church.  It was a short distance but a major job.  Andy & one of the church members held on to the piano on the trailer while Dave drove the truck to the church

Dave & Andy installed an air conditioner in the wall of the building where a washer & dryer will be installed for NOMADS to use.

Bethlehem was put on two nights. The village was filled with over 400 people who came to see it.

The church's bell choir played songs and their regular choir sang several songs as well as had a sing-a-long.

Moving this big pile of chairs was all part of cleaning out the building for the new washer & dryer.

We were given several jobs to complete at the Sanctuary.

We couldn't resist going to Whoville! (Crystal River downtown) for their tree lighting. There was Florida snow---just add water, lots of games for kids, & stores filled with specials. Many of the people attending dressed up as Whoville characters.  Even the Grinch himself was there!

Saturday night was the Crystal River Christmas Parade.  The theme was Star Wars "May the Force Be with you".  The parade was over 1 1/2 hours long with every type of float you can imagine.  Tons of candy was tossed to the crowd as well as beads, roses, & bibles were given out.
