Odem Texas Hurricane Harvey Rebuild Dec 1 - 7, 2018

It is starting to look a lot like Christmas everywhere. The church is decorated, & we attended a Christmas program in Corpus Christi. It was great weather to go to the beach as well. This week we finished our third house in Rockport.  We finished sanding the drywall, priming & painting the garage by noon on Tuesday.  The team at the house in Aransas Pass got most of the inside done & then joined the rest of the team at another house we were starting in Rockport while they wait on the rest of their supplies. The whole team worked at the new house in Rockport on Wednesday & Thursday.

When we came to church in Odem on Sunday it was decorated for Christmas. There was a the nativity set up in the sanctuary.

They have a banner on the advent wreath that tell what advent candle will be lit for the Sunday. This Sunday was hope.

At the end of the church service the church members picked up a handmade ornament and placed it on the tree in front of the sanctuary.

After church several of us went to Corpus Christ to the UMC Church for their Handle's Messiah. We left early so we could go to the beach across the road from the church. It was sunny & warm perfect beach weather.  Sara & Sue looked for beach treasure.

The Corpus Christi UMC has Jesus in a boat in front of the church looking towards the water it is a portrayal of Jesus calming the waters.

Inside the church narthex are numerous Nativity sets from different states & countries.

Hanging from the balcony at the back of the church are angel banners for Christmas.

They have a big Christmas tree in the front of the church.

The church was filled with people.

Their production was very professional complete with an orchestra & choir.

Our team this week consisted of (back row) Jerry, Dennis, Gary, & Kevin, (front row) Sue, Nancy, Avis, & Laura.

On Monday part of the team started with working to finish the house in Rockport, we had a lot of sanding to be done. Kevin worked on the ceilings.

After sanding we primed the walls & ceilings.

Nancy and Jerry were left at this project to paint the walls & ceilings. Jerry painted the ceilings & Nancy painted the walls.

We presented the home owner with the bible & poinsettia.

In Aransas Pass they were also working on sanding & painting drywall. They worked on the back room area.

The kitchen needed lots of work.

The back room was primed & painted.

The rooms were painted & trim was put in place.  They still have some touch up to do on this house and vents to get installed. There is also a part of the outside wall that needs to be replaced to complete this project.

Dennis, Lora and Kevin moved to the new house on Monday Morning where we started. It is in Copano Cove and it is right on Copano Bay, in an area that was very hard hit by Harvey. The houses on both side of this were totally destroyed. The rebuild of the house was worked on by a group of teens before our team came in.  The drywall was started but we had to make sure it was properly installed and make repairs. Laura removed the drywall & put it back in place after adjustments were made.

Kevin took measurements for the new drywall. & cut the pieces for the wall in the living room.

Dennis worked at making the new door for the bathroom fit. The wall was wider in the center than at the top or bottom of the frame. Tuesday afternoon Nancy and Jerry joined us on this house.

On Wednesday morning Sue, Avis and Gary came to this house putting their on on hold waiting for supplies. Here Sue trimmed drywall to fit the wall.  Because the walls were moved by the hurricane they were always an easy size so pieces of drywall had to be custom fit.

Gary added supports to the kitchen ceiling so that drywall could be hung there.

Nancy added drywall to the support post in the living room.

Jerry boxed in the ceiling around the hvac chase.

Avis pulled nails & screws out of the kitchen walls. There were lot of nails, screws & wires that needed to be removed or put in the proper place before drywall could be added.

Dennis added studs to turn the old porch windows into a wall & then added insulation.

Gary came up with a way to hold the drywall in place above the cabinets in the kitchen.  He really used his head on that job.

Kevin & Jerry added drywall to the ceiling chase box bottom to cover the area.

Dennis put insulation in the ceiling of the kitchen so we could put drywall up on the ceiling.

To get out of all the dust we went to Dairy Queen for lunch on Thursday.

Sue found a new tool that she had to try.  It cuts out circles. The circles were cut out of the drywall for the can lights that the electrician had installed. We made great progress on this house but there will still be many days of work to go.
