This was our 7th Week at Odem Texas working on the disaster project. We continued to work on the house in Rockport. We had two couples come in this week which put our team at 10 people.
The church in Odem is where we are parked. The church members and Pastor Cliff were very gracious to us. It was about 50 miles to drive each way to the house we worked at.
This is the parking area for the RV's. It is across the street from the church in a paved parking area.
Our team this week was (back row) Sam, Dennis, Gary, Joe & Bob. (Front row) Sue, Nancy, Avis, Jayne, & Leone.
Five of the NOMADS participated in the Christmas Cantata at the Odem church. Avis, Nancy, Dennis, Gary & Sue went to several practices. The cantata was great.
The children of the church dressed up as angels and sang a few songs.
After church there was a potluck. There was lots of great food.
There were several deserts.
We visited with several church members at the potluck.
After the potluck we took a trip to Padre Island National Park.
The visitor center had several decks where you could look over the water.
Padre Island is known for it's turtles.
No trip to Padre Island is complete without going to the seashore.
For our team meeting we had a dinner of leftovers from the church potluck.
We started the week with mudding! Jayne mixed the mud.
Sue worked on the chase making the mud smoother.
Avis took measurements for the insulation for the second bathroom & Nancy cut it.
Bob, Dennis, & Sam put drywall up on the ceiling of the 3rd bedroom.
Nancy checked the front porch for screws & nails then removed them before putting up insulation.
Joe added studs & braces to the wall in bathroom 2 before mounting the electrical box.
Leone got plenty of mudding practice in the kitchen, dining room, & living room.
Avis & Nancy started removing the old shower surround in bathroom 2.
Dennis made some repairs to the bedroom door frame.
Jayne got a lesson on how to use the banjo from Gary.
Avis removed wires to no where & used staples to hook up wires that were used.
We encountered some obstacles on the porch putting up insulation. There was a damaged wardrobe in our way to work around.
Tuesday night we said goodbye to Sue. We went to a barbecue restaurant in Calallen with Pastor Cliff & his wife Vicky.
The Rockport UMC pastor Laura came to visit us at the house we were working at.
Joe framed in the door frame for the water heater in the first bathroom and installed the door.
On the front porch Bob & Sam put drywall up on the ceiling.
Dennis cut & installed trim on the ceiling edges and around the chase.
For devotions on Thursday Nancy made up the Christmas Blessing Mix. It's filled with Bugles, Pretzels, Red Hots, Nuts, Cranberries, M&M's, Candy Cane, & Hershey Kisses.
On our way to & from the house each day we had a traffic delay as the new metal electric transmission poles were being installed.
On Thursday we came up with a way to move the wardrobe across the porch so we could finish dry walling the ceiling.
Bob built a frame trim to put on the inside of the windows in the living room.
Dennis & Sam moved the washer & dryer out of the laundry so we could continue putting up drywall in the laundry room.
Avis caulked the trim in the living room.
Dennis caulked the windows.
Dennis & Sam helped unload the drywall & T-111.
Gary spent lots of time getting the mud on the drywall ready to paint.
This was bedroom 3 by the end of the week. The door was on the furnace but still needed the vent installed for the cold air return
The second bathroom is ready for new plumbing, new water heater, shower, & window trim then paint.
There are still a few pieces of dry wall to put on the porch ceiling. The walls will have T-111.
The kitchen, living room, bathroom 1 & bedrooms are getting closer to completion. This has been a great NOMADS project for our team.
On Thursday night we went to a Mexican Restaurant in Odem as our farewell dinner at this point we were the only ones leaving this weekend.
On Friday morning we pulled out of Odem Texas on our way to Florida for some time off and then our projects in January. We crossed into Florida late Saturday afternoon before stopping for the night. As we traveled I-10 we witnessed a lot of devastation along the roadway from Hurricane Michael. We are sure it will only be a matter of time before we are in this area helping for the recovery.
On Sunday afternoon we arrived at the Life Enrichment Center in Fruitland Park for the start of our rest period. We have plans to meet up with friends before moving on.
This sign is a great motto for what we plan to do for the next few days while here.
