Boulder City to Vegas to Grand Canyon Mar 11 to Mar 14

The second part of our first week was spent touring Lake Mead National Park, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, & The Grand Canyon.

At Lake Mead we went to the visitor center right outside of Boulder City.

At Hoover Dam we went on a tour.  The tour took us through the power plant where we saw the turbines that generate the power.

On the tour we also got to view the dam from inside one of the air vents & walk across the dam.

After the tour we drove across the dam.

Since we were so close to Las Vegas we decided to see some of the sites there.

The signage was amazing.  They had several stores like the Pepsi & Starbucks.

One of Nancy's favorite stores was the M & M store.  It was filled with everything & anything M & M from candy to stuffed toys & even the M & M Nascar.

Before we even got to the entrance to Grand Canyon we were greeted by a herd of elk.  Several of them walk back & forth on the road to the entrance.

Our first stop was the visitor center where we found out about all the things to do in The Grand Canyon.

After watching the movie we walked part of the rim trail.  There was still snow in the canyon, on buildings, parking lot & along the trails.  We took the park bus to several places in the park & enjoyed the views, exhibits, & stores. There was a requirement to wear cleats on your shoes if going on the trail down into the canyon due to ice on the trail.

We took a helicopter tour to see the Canyon  & were able to see lots of snow in the north rim.  There was snow on the canyon edges & among the trees. The morning temperatures were in the high 20's and only got up to 50 during the day. The north rim opens for the season in May and is a days trip from the south rim.

You could see where the Colorado River cut through the canyon.

The helicopter tour took us to parts of the Grand Canyon that we would not be otherwise able to see. What a week we have had, our "Bucket List" is shrinking! Stay tuned as we have more tourist adventures planned before we get to our next project.

  1. What a great adventure, never saw the Grand Canyon from the air, but saw it covered with snow in January.
