Williams and Flagstaff Arizona Area Mar 14 - Mar 17

This week we visited several National Parks on our way east. We stayed in Williams Arizona.  It is the gateway to the Grand Canyon and the last city on Route 66 that was bypassed by I40.
We stayed in Williams, Arizona.  It is along old Route 66 and this is the arch over the road on the way in.

Williams is a small city filled with nostalgic places to visit & shop at.

Several of the stores sold the iconic route 66 signs this store displayed the largest emblem in the nation was the claim.

At our campground was a steam train engine from Saginaw & Manistee Lumber Company.

Nancy couldn't resist visiting with Smokey The Bear.

We went to Montezuma Castle National Monument which is just south of Flagstaff.

You could not get up close to the cliff dwellings because of effort trying to preserve them.

These were the neighboring cliff dwellings with pockets in the mountains.

Next we went to Walnut Canyon National Monument.  There was a steep pathway down to the cliff dwellings.

From the visitor center you could see the pathway.

Dennis went down the path where several cliff over hangs were used as part of the dwellings in the past.

Snow was still on the pathways.

The cliff dwellings were spectacular.

We also went to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.

The Visitor Center still had lots of snow.

We took a hike along the lava flow.  It was very tall.

We also hiked to a crater overlook.  The path was filled with pumice & gained 400 feet in altitude in the mile path.

On the lava flow trail we met a squirrel.  He stopped to pose.

Signs along the way showed how time had changed the crater.

We also went to Wupatki national Monument.

Their gardening system showed how they were able to grow corn.

We went on all the hikes to the ruins.

We hiked through the ruins of one of the large communities.  Here is the ball court where they held their ceremonies.

On our travels this week we crossed the Arizona Divide several times.
