This was our first week working in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. We had 10 NOMADS on our team. We are parked at Oak Grove UMC on the west side of Hattiesburg. We we given two houses to continue to work on. One is in Hattiesburg and the other is in Petal where our team worked in November on Highway 42. By the end of the week we are getting close to finishing the work these two houses need to have done to get the families back in them.
This was our team: Dennis & Nancy (the leaders), Ray & Cathy, Larry & Jean, Cliff & Ann, & Bruce & Janette.
At our team meeting Sunday afternoon we had Klondike Bars & cookies.
At the house on Cedar Street in Hattiesburg, one of the jobs was to fix the kitchen cabinet counter top around the stove. Ray, Bruce and Cliff discuss how to repair the large gap between the stove & half wall.
Larry and Bruce discuss the 9 windows that needed to be replaced on the Cedar Street house. Two of the windows were on front brick walls & the rest on siding.
Removing the windows was a challenge. Larry and Ray got into the demolition mode with the panes of glass that had to be broken to get the old windows out.
At the house in Petal, Bruce and Dennis discussed the removal of paneling in the kitchen around the pocket door because it had been pieced in by other volunteers and did not look good.
The bathroom had a lot of work that needed to be done. Bruce, Cliff, Janette and Dennis discuss the drywall on the walls that needed finishing & the vanity & stool needed to be installed.
The tile under the pocket door between the kitchen and laundry room was sunken so it had to be removed & the old thin set chiseled out.
Cliff got into the destruction mode by removing the old pieces of paneling on both sides of the pocket door.
Ann got busy cleaning the siding outside the porch overhang that needed to be cleaned.
Cliff also worked on installing the ceiling trim in the bathroom.
Dennis cut a new piece of tile to go under the pocket door.
Ann helped with all of the caulking that had to be done at both houses.
New paneling & trim was installed in the kitchen around the pocket door by Dennis, Bruce and Janette.
Ray and Larry worked at installing new windows on Cedar Street. This was one of the windows that went into the front brick wall, which turned out to be easier than any had figured.
Walls were primed & painted at the Cedar St house by Cathy and Jean.
In Petal the bathroom drywall was worked on by Cliff.
There were 3 beams outside the front of the Hwy 42 that needed to be replaced. The old beams had twists to them.
The lower kitchen cabinets came in & the hole had to be cut for the pipes.
Thursday morning we were treated to donuts before our devotion. There is a wonderful donut store right across the street from where we are parked.
On Cedar St the expanding foam was put around the windows to fill gaps.
The inside of the windows were trimmed out By Larry.
In Petal, Dennis put in the final piece of tile under the pocket door.
The vanity in the bathroom came in & will be finished installing next week.
After a week of working we went out for BBQ. This little pig on the front porch had all the parts marked.
We went to Leatha's Bar-B-Que. The food was good & portion size was large.
